BUTTONWOOD LANE
Located on the outskirts of Rhinebeck NY, this new 2400 s.f. single family residence, is situated on a heavily wooded site with neighbors in close proximity. The topography varies dramatically with a 20’ vertical change across the site. The challenge was to maintain privacy, yet capture light and views; all with minimal ecological impact on the landscape. The volume of the house is shaped as the result of faceting a roof for optimal winter sun and minimal summer heat gain. Placed along an east-west axis, the building is oriented to maximize views of the woods and reduce visibility of the neighbors. A simple rotation of the ridge beam accomplishes the dual task of providing a subtle orientation shift, while accommodating the elevation change in the site.
